What

Everything.

Why not?

It is an automatic procedure that runs while you are browsing the online newspapers or reading your mail.

Let it grab everything.

After all, what have you got to lose?

Hi Chris,

So what do you use for your backup program?

-grin-

Thanks for asking!

It is a DOS batch file that runs from the StartUp folder.
On the Big Beige Box it tests the date, checks the removable drive is in place, and if it is the first boot of the day, backs-up up the laptop and the big beige box to the removable drive, then shuts down.

If it is the first boot and the removable drive is NOT in place, I get a warning message.

If it is NOT the first boot and the removable drive is in place, I get a warning message.

The laptop startup sequence (another DOS batch file) monitors the backup job's progress, and when it detects that the job is complete, it assigns the drive letter "B" to my daily blotter folder, so that B: maps to (today) "C:\Blotter\20060718".

I can work in drive B: all day every day, and I get a fresh blotter each morning!

You are welcome - of course! I can be full of questions but I'll limit it to just another one - for now!

So I have to ask? What is a "Blotter"?

I wish I was as thorough as you about backing up data but I am not. I really need to get organized and have a plan in place because - as you pointed out on one of your comments - what if I had to restore my box NOW! I'm not sure I could put it all in place.........I'd better think out a strategy and then DO it! Yes in deed! -smile-

Thanks for asking. As the respoonse is rather lengthy and includes graphics I have posted it on my web site at http://www.chrisgreaves.com/backups/Blotters.html

Thanks for the quick response! -grin- I like the idea of designating a clean folder for just today's work but since I never seem to get to the end of any project, I would probably be overrun by folders eventually. But....you have given me something else to ponder upon......

It is apparent that I really should go through your site before I ask any more questions since some of my questions will be answered there. I also need to see if I can find an easy link to your blog site. I have this page bookmarked for quick access but I am not certain how I even got here in the first place. -grin-

Thanks for sharing! I appreciate your generosity! -yep-

Don't sweat the details, eh? I sometimes begin something in a blotter folder then realsie during the day that it might have lasting value. I create a folder in a long-term project area and drag the relevant files from the blotter folder to that project folder.
It's really no different from transcribing hand-written notes from a scrap of paper to a better-written form.

I hate to counter but (grin!) part of my blogging purpose is to encourage visitors to my site. I sometimes forget what i have there. Post a question here; if the answer is on my site I'll reply with a link.

You can reach any of my business pages via http://www.chrisgreaves.com

You can reach any of my SUFE pages via www.chrisgreaves.com/SUFE

All my web site pages should be displaying links to the rest of the site and to the relevant blogs.

Have fun!
